The Perfect Family Getaway: Japan

For the perfect family getaway, look no further than the land of the rising sun.

Japan is a feast of sights, sounds, colours and tastes that appeal to people both young and old alike. Culture and tradition rub shoulders with innovation and technology, ensuring that nobody in the family gets bored. Couple this with a country that is clean, safe and amazingly punctual and you need look no further to plan your next family trip, and, contrary to common belief, the experience doesn't have to be expensive.

Something for everyone: Japan boasts a vast wilderness in the north, sub-tropical white sand beaches in the south, majestic mountain ranges and impressive national parks. Tokyo is a 'must see' city with a vibrant heart and incredible night time illuminations, whilst Kyoto offers culture and ancient architecture. From seeing Mt Fuji on a clear day from the cable car in Hakone, to spotting deer and wild monkeys on the sacred island of Miyajima, there are endless aspects to Japan.

Stay in traditional Japanese accommodation:
Traditional Japanese inns lend themselves very well to family stays, with many tatami-floored rooms being large enough to accommodate up to six futons, plus sliding doors to separate one room into two.

New experiences:
Go to a taiko drumming class one day, Tokyo Disneyland the next, then perhaps learn how to prepare Japanese cuisine, or visit the beating heart of Japanese animation, Studio Ghibli, or try a guided bike tour around Tokyo. Visit Harajuku and see how 'cosplay' (dressing up in character) has gripped the younger generations, and dress up yourself, as a samurai or a Geisha, at the Kyoto Toei Studio Park, used as a set for period dramas.

A range of transport:
Getting from one place to another in Japan is an experience in itself. Kick back on the famous bullet train; ride a funicular up a mountain-side; take a tiny train through the hills or enjoy a cable car ride over serene lakes.

This wonderful introductory journey features the highlights of Japan on an 8 night trip staying in modern Tokyo and historic Kyoto. You will be riding the iconic Shinkansen 'Bullet' Train between these two cities which perfectly showcase the two sides of Japan – both modern and ancient.

- Five nights in Tokyo (three nights in traditional Asakusa and two nights neon-lit Shinjuku, both with breakfast). Whilst you're here you will experience an energetic Taiko drumming experience.

- Three nights in Kyoto (self-catering ‘machiya’ Japanese style town house). Here there's the opportunity to try your hand at traditional Japanese cooking in a hands-on Kyoto cookery class. We have included a half day of private guided tours in both destinations plus airport transfers and all domestic travel. Transfers are by private car with meet and greet on arrival.

We can offer three new holiday packages designed to appeal to families, starting at £4,490 (total for two adults, one teenager and one child under twelve).
International flights extra.

Balloon Flight over Egypt

Dave reports from his unique experience in Egypt earlier this year.

As someone who does ‘not do’ early mornings and is not keen on heights – perhaps I was not the best person to take part in a Hot Air Balloon Trip in Luxor!  Leaving the hotel at 0400hrs accompanied by other nervous travellers we made the trip  across the Nile to the West Bank and our departure point for the one hour flight.

We were greeted by the sight of 7 or 8 balloons all being prepared for departure and lots of activity taking place around them. The safety briefing restored a little confidence as our Captain was wearing a Blue Peter Badge, surely nothing could go wrong now?  First problem however was getting into the basket, not as easy as I thought  but  eventually I was on board and all ready to go.

Our balloon ascended and yes I finally managed to open my eyes. The truth is it was amazing, a fantastic experience flying close to The Temple of Hatsheput, a site we had visited the previous day, hovering over rooftops so close you felt you could almost touch the locals before ascending high into the sky for some amazing views of Luxor and  Thebes. The sun rising over these fantastic monuments, the quietness and the stunning views are something I will remember forever, the landing itself was so gentle and disembarking from the balloon was so easy, I felt like a professional.

Would I do it again? You bet I would and even without a Blue Peter Guide!

Dave enjoyed this excursion whilst on a special tour of Egypt, you can too with an itinerary that includes:

Day 1: Cairo
Tuesday. Welcome to Egypt and the start of your holiday! Arrive Cairo, included airport arrival transfer to hotel and overnight. Overnight - Cairo

Day 2: Pyramids of Giza & Saqqara
Cairo - Luxor. Today a visit to the incredible pyramids and Sphinx at Giza Plateau. It’s estimated the largest - Khufu (Cheops) was constructed from no less than 2.5 million quarried limestone blocks, weighing around 6 million tonnes. No mean feat, when you consider the pyramids were built without the use of modern equipment! Maybe opt for a camel ride. Travelling on to the necropolis of Saqqara, innumerable sand strewn temples and tombs await discovery. It’s at Saqqara where you’ll see Zhoser’s step pyramid. Rising 6 steps, it served as the prototype for ancient Egypt’s most enduring architectural legacy. Overnight train to Luxor - consider upgrading to a Sleeper cabin. Overnight - Train

Day 3: Luxor
Arrive and check into the hotel. One of the world's greatest open-air museums, the 4000 year old site of ancient Thebes - known today as Luxor is our base for two exciting days of exploration. Enjoy some rest and relaxation. Tonight, an optional visit to Temple of Luxor. The temple is magically illuminated by a thousand coloured lights at night fall, book and pay locally. Remainder of the evening at leisure with a chance to enjoy the facilities of our hotel. Overnight - Luxor

Day 4: Valley of the Kings
Luxor - Cairo. There is the option to float over Luxor in a hot air balloon at sunrise. From high above we look down upon ancient Thebes, remarkable landscape and local villages waking up to start their day. Afterward we cross to the West Bank of the Nile. The massive pair of statues known as the Colossi of Memnon are the first monuments we’ll see as we start our day's sightseeing. They are all that remains of the temple of Amenophis III. Today, we visit the Valleys of the Kings and the imposing colonnaded temple of Queen Hatshepsut.

Returning to our hotel, we enjoy free time before visiting Karnak. More than a temple, Karnak is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, pylons and obelisks - built on a grand scale. During the height of Theban power, Karnak was the most important place of worship. Tonight, we return to Cairo by overnight train. Overnight - Train

Day 5: Egyptian Museum
Arrive to Cairo and hotel check-in. Later, a guided visit to the Egyptian Museum. See the famous King Tutankhamen solid gold death mask or opt to see the Royal Mummy room. Remains of the afternoon and evening free to do your own thing. Overnight - Cairo

Day 6: Cairo
Sunday. The tour ends after breakfast and includs onward departure transfer to the airport.

6 day tour from £299pp + flights
Hot air balloon excursion: +£99pp

Special Offer - Book this tour with us before 30th October 2012 for departure before the end of 2012 and save 10% off the land only part of the tour.
