Below is a review of our event held on Thursday 26th January where we were joined by Amrit Singh who was born in Burma and Lyn hughes, Editor in Chief of Wanderlust magazine. This was the second in our series of 'Travel Lectures' and it was a wonderful evening. Thanks to all those who attended.

One of our clients sent in the below review of the evening, we loved it so much we wanted to share it with everyone...

“On the road to Mandalay,

Where the flyin’-fishes play,

An’ the dawn comes up like thunder out o’ China ‘crost the Bay…..”

Having spent Thursday evening at an excellent travel lecture on Burma, organised by Robert Broad Travel, I am wondering if Kipling’s grasp of Burmese geography was a bit tenuous. Mandalay sits pretty well in the middle of Burma, many miles from the sea - almost the equivalent of Lichfield to the English coast…..and a similarly long distance from the Chinese border.

But despite this poetic-license, for those of us who are old enough to remember it as a Great-Uncle’s party-piece at Christmas, this tale of a simple Raj Squaddie, growing tired and wet in the London drizzle and longing to be back with his Burmese girl on the banks of the Irrawaddy, is full of nostalgia and legendary place-names.

The very large audience who attended the lecture at the Garrick didn’t just consist of people who enjoyed Kipling however. Burma (Myanmar) is increasingly in the news, as the Military Junta that has ruled the place for many years begins to soften its grip - and ‘The Lady’, Aung San Suu Kyi, has said that an influx of visitors from the outside world would now be a good thing. So after years of isolation the country is opening up to tourism.

In a question-and answer session, hosted by Director of Rober Broad Travel Oliver Broad, many of our queries about visiting this new frontier were answered by Lyn Hughes, founder of ‘Wanderlust’ Magazine – and Amrit Singh from TransIndus. Both these women knew and loved the country, particularly Amrit who had been born there and had continued to visit relatives throughout Burma’s years of isolation.

They each gave us a tantalizing glimpse of this fascinating and idiosyncratic country, a lot of sound travel advice - and an insight into a delightful culture: A country where there are virtually no ATM’s - but you can put money in a slot-machine that dispenses tiny pieces of gold-leaf for temple decoration, sounds like our sort of place.

But I think their prime message was not to delay too long before planning a visit – get there whilst the magic is still strong.

“Come you back, you British tourist; come you back to Mandalay”.

BBC Wildlife Photographer Sue Flood to join Expedition Cruises...

BBC Wildlife Photographer Sue Flood will soon be joining the Orion Expedition Team. She has worked with Sir David Attenborough on programmes such as The Blue Planet and Planet Earth and produced many other wildlife documentaries. Since leaving the BBC in 2005 Sue enjoys guiding tailor-made wildlife photography trips to the Antarctic, Costa Rica, Rwanda and Zambia and has been named International Photographer of the Year. Sue will be giving presentations in the Orion Expedition Cruises Cosmos Lecture Theatre and Leda Lounge and travelling ashore on some of the excursions.

Good news for Burma

Good news for Burma as we make final preparations for our Burma Travel Lecture...The European Union is now in the process of reviewing sanctions against Myanmar to encourage signs of reform initiated by the nominally civilian government following decades of military rule.

Fresh aid programmes for Myanmar are also under consideration. Ministers are expected to announce a willingness "to consider initial steps in February 2012" in order to give a sign of encouragement before Myanmar’s April elections" which will see a historic bid for parliament by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

This evening we will be joined by Amrit Singh and Editor-in-Chief of Wanderlust magazine, Lyn Hughes for the 2nd in our Travel Lecture series.

Northern Lights from the Ice Hotel...

Lisa, one of our two resident Ice Hotel specialists recalls her visit to the Aurora Sky station during her trip to Sweden where she stayed at the famous Ice Hotel.

It has been almost a year since I visited the Ice Hotel but the memories are still very fresh and will last a life time. The Ice Hotel is as busy as ever and scientists have predicted that 2011/2012 will be the best, brightest and most dramatic opportunity to view the Aurora (Northern Lights) in a long time. With this in mind we have been experiencing an increased demand in people who want to visit the wonderful Ice Hotel and the opportunity to see the amazing Northern Lights.

The excursion to the Abisko Sky Station has been extremely popular, located to the west of Kiruna, the mountains of the Abisko National Park dominate the landscape. Towards the summit of Mount Nuolja, in the heart of the range, stands the Aurora Sky Station which at latitude of 68.2°offers one of the finest platforms for viewing the Aurora Borealis away from artificial lights. The excursion that we offer includes collection from the Ice Hotel (transfer time approximately 1 hour) and the Sky Station is accessible by cable car which takes 20 minutes.

A three-course evening meal, influenced by Nordic cuisine is included and will be served in the Aurora Sky Station. After dinner have free time to view the Aurora exhibition and to sit outside under the dark night sky. On a clear night, hopefully the Northern Lights will be dancing across the sky above.

It was most definately one of the most memorable trips of my life, and Abisko Aurora Sky station was a great excursion, and one which is a must if you want to see the Northern Lights - but be quick, the best season is from January - March!

With the launch of the new Virgin Atlantic services to Vancouver starting in May, Canada’s wild and wonderful west will once again come under the media spotlight. No doubt the number of British visitors to the region, which already outnumbers other parts, is likely to swell even more by the addition of new flights (already served nonstop from the UK by BA and Air Canada).

But I’d like to take a few moments to readjust the balance and sing the praises of Canada’s East including the shores of the mighty St Lawrence and the Atlantic seaboard. As well as including the more high profile provinces of Ontario (home to Toronto and Niagara Falls) and French-speaking Quebec, the area encompasses tiny Prince Edward Island, recently put squarely on the world map after a visit from Prince William and his new bride, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador. But rather than simply take you on a slow verbal meander around the lot, I’d like to focus on just one of these lesser known corners of Canada, Nova Scotia.

Give Nova Scotia a two week summer holiday and I will give you a destination that ticks an incredible diversity of boxes. Among the amazing experiences on offer is the Cabot Trail, a stunning scenic drive that competes with the Pacific Coast Highway in California or the Great Ocean Drive in Australia.

There’s more. Much more. I can virtually guarantee sightings of whales, and maybe a moose or two. You can visit award-winning wineries in the fertile Annapolis Valley, where you’ll be on the same latitude as Bordeaux, as well as a whisky distillery that looks as if it’s been airlifted from the Scottish Highlands. The local seafood, including lobsters at a fraction of UK prices, is the freshest imaginable, and there are lots of interesting places to stay, from a remote wilderness lodge that belongs to the luxury Relais & Chateaux alliance to historic, family-run inns converted from the homes of old sea captains.

There’s no shortage of culture in amongst Nova Scotia’s natural assets, topped by Acadian heritage from the days when the region was tossed between British and French colonial masters, with the enormous fort at Louisbourg the most iconic feature. The province also boasts deep Celtic roots from the time of the ‘Highland Clearances’ when Scots were forced by ruthless landowners to abandon their crofts and, with them, their livelihoods.

Seekers of thrills and spills will be enticed by Nova Scotia’s most thrilling adventure, tidal bore rafting in the Bay of Fundy where you ride up the wall of water on the incoming tide, which happens to be the biggest in the world, and then toss around in the froth and foam as the water surges forth over sandbanks. For gentler action I would recommend a mild canoe trip through the Kejimkujik National Park.

Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, will next year be taking its place on a world stage when its marks the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, the city being where many of the victims were first brought ashore and were subsequently buried in the local cemetery (after being housed in the local funeral home - in what is now the city’s finest restaurant, the Five Fishermen!). The Halifax Maritime Museum has a permanent Titanic exhibition.

We are very pleased to confirm that Lyn Hughes, Founder and Editor of Wanderlust magazine will be joining our 2nd event in our lecture series in January. Lyn will be one of the speakers at our next lecture which is taking place in Lichfield on Thursday 26th January. The talk, the 2nd in our series of lectures will be concentrating on the changes taking place in Burma and why this coming year is an ideal time to visit the fascinating country.

Accompanying Lyn will be Amrit Singh, Director of TransIndus. Amrit was born in Burma and visited family there earlier this year along with Lyn and the result was a wonderful feature in the current issue of Wanderlust magazine (pictured right).

In 1992 Lyn and her late husband, Paul Morrison, were bored on a flight to South America and so schemed out their ideal travel magazine on the back of a sickbag. The idea stuck and, returning to the UK a few months later, they launched Wanderlust magazine from their spare bedroom.

The magazine gradually grew through word of mouth, and went on to be one of the UK’s leading travel magazines, with numerous awards under its belt.

After a long fight with cancer, Paul Morrison died in December 2004 and Lyn took on the roles of managing director and publisher, as well as editor-in-chief. In 2007 and 2008, Lyn was Highly Commended as Publisher of the Year. The Times lauded Lyn as one of the "50 Most Influential People in Travel."A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Lyn is still a writer and photographer in her own right. She is regularly consulted by tourist boards and governments on travel-related issues, especially regarding ethical tourism. She sits on several committees, including LATA (the Latin American Travel Association), VJC (the Visit Japan Committee) and IPAC (the Independent Publishers' Advisory Council).

During the course of Lyn’s own travels she has been attacked in the night by soldier ants in Africa, spent the night in a sailor’s bar in the Azores, and been chased over a barbed-wire-topped 6ft-bank by an angry Irish bull. Her idea of hell would be a week on a beach.

In Sabi Sands we had opted for a luxury lodge which gave a fantastic contrast with my tented experience in Timbavati. Wow! I was blown away with our choice. It was truly amazing. luxurious, but still maintaining that African feel. Our suite no 7 had a water hole 15 feet away from our own private plunge pool. On our second afternoon, after the morning game drive, we encountered a heard of elephant drinking from the water hole metres away from our suite. It was one of the memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Magical!

So after our 2 night stay it was time to leave the Kruger and embark on the next leg of our adventure - The Rovos Rail, one of the world’s most luxurious train journeys through the heart of South Africa.

We had never travelled overnight on a train before, so were not quite sure what to expect.

On arrival at Pretoria station, we really felt that we had been taken back in time to a bygone era; old fashioned luxury which can be hard to find in our modern world. The train being steam hauled out of Pretoria was another unforgettable moment!

Our 3 day / 2 night journey was fantastic from start to finish, very relaxing after the long days spent on safari. We travelled through changing scenery that lead us on the 1600kms journey to Cape Town.

Stopping at Kimberley to explore the diamond mines was just another highlight, eating food that would be worthy of any of the worlds best restaurants and experiencing many different wines and of course plenty of cape classique - South Africa's version of Champagne!

Our arrival into the Mother City - Cape Town, started the last leg of our South African itinerary. I hadn't visited Cape Town since 2006. It was one of my most favourite cities in the world after my first visit, so I was hoping that my second trip would live up to expectations. It didn't let me down! It is a city with great contrasts. With the beautiful Table Mountain never far out of sight, you can explore some great sites. From the well known places such as the V&A waterfront, you are never more than 20 minutes away from the next experience; amazing beaches, vineyards, gardens and penguins are all on the doorstep.

My second visit to South Africa surpassed all my expectations. There was such a vast array of different experiences in this one trip, it would prove hard to surpass in any other country in the world.

Marrakech: Day 2...

Our Director Oliver Broad reports on his 2nd day so far in Marrakech...

Today I have been to see 3 more properties in Marrakech that we offer: Riad Joya, Riad Kniza and Villa des Orangers. As with yesterday's viewings, each were very different with my personal favourite for first time visitors to Marrakech being Villa des Orangers. The option of both pools is great even if you have to compromise on a little noise from the chaos of Marrakech outside. The simplicity of Riad Joya with its 7 unique rooms blend modern design elements with hints of Moroccan flavour. For those looking for a property full of trinkets and knick-knacks then Riad Kniza is for you, perfect for the first time visitor if you want to be surrounded by history and character.

Marrakech: Organised chaos !

There is simply only one way to describe Marrakech: 'Organised chaos!' The sun is out in the city and its a beautifully hot October's day, which is unusual for this time of year so make the most of it and get over here quick!

Today I had a tour of some lovely Riads, from the traditionally Morrocan Riad Farnatchi (thanks for the mint tea James) to the Wonderfully stylish La Sultana, the uber chic and retro Villa Makassar to the wonderfully welcoming Jardins de la Medina. All very different in their own way and waiting for you to spend a hot long weekend before the days turn cool.

And then its onto the Pure Life exhibition for the rest of the week where the great and the good of experiential travel from all over the world meet - and we are here to get the latest news and updates from some of the best properties and destinations around the world.

Orient-Express experience

It is a few days now since I travelled from Venice back to the UK on the Orient Express. What a once in a lifetime experience!

The food was superb, company delightful and service impeccable. Each steward, waiter and member of the VSOE team had a story to tell. From the 2nd generation bar staff to the porters who would dare not reveal the secrets of a thousand lives hidden within the carriages from years of entertaining.

Each carriage has been carefully restored to its former glory. The three restaurant cars all carried very distinct design features and marquetry from some of the worlds most skilled artists.

Spending a night onboard is not only a once in a lifetime experience, but a real eye opener to times gone by. Each carriage has a plaque detailing its history and you can only imagine the characters that have walked through and enjoyed a special night onboard such an iconic train.

And now, following a quick stay at the Cipriani in Venice (also owned by Orient-Express) I was the next lucky one to become part of history.

The cabin was surprisingly comfortable, and one should remember this is luxury within the means of its surroundings, you are after all on a train - but of course no ordinary train!

The seats are skilfully converted into a single or bunk bed layout while you enjoy your evening dinner further down the train. The onboard stewards take great pride in their work, and as you will see when you return after dinner it is not an easy task at hand.

The scenery is wonderful, the atmosphere electric as fellow explorers gain excitement as the evening progresses.

During a stop in Paris you can witness some of the interesting ways in which this working train carries out the most simplest tasks. From loading fresh fish from the local market, to the cleaning out of the previous evenings empty boxes, all is taken care of like a scientific experiment; with great care and attention.

I don't want to give much more away really! It certainly exceeded my expectations, I was quite frankly overwhelmed on arrival and speechless (very rare!) while I took it all in.

There is no doubt the Venice-Simplon Orient-Express should be on everyone's 'Bucket List' - I just hope one day I can return.

Venice to London on the Orient-Express

I'm sitting at Verona station having completed our first short leg on the Venice-Simplon Orient-Express.

There is simply no better way to make the journey back to London. Each individually styled carriage is absolutely exquisite, and this is simply a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We left The Cipriani early this morning and were transported by water taxi along the Grand Canal before the crowds awoke, a must for anyone visiting Venice!

The train is superb with more room than I expected and everything attended to in the most efficient and luxurious detail.

I feel very lucky to be travelling in such style.

Right, off to lunch, lots of photographs to share when I get home!

LIVE from South Africa - Nathan reports...

Robert Broad Travel Director Nathan Collins is in South Africa, experiencing the Rovos Rail and a number of properties we offer to bring you first hand knowledge and advice when booking with us. This is Nathan's second visit to South Africa and has rediscovered his love for the country...

Here is his first report back...

After a connecting flight to Hoedspruit we had arrived in the heart of the Kruger National Park. We transferred to the Timbavati Reserve to our luxury tented camp for a 2 night stay.

This was a fantastic experience. You really got the feeling you were sleeping in the bush, but still having all the luxury of running hot water and an outdoor shower. The game viewing was great and it was a really authentic African experience. We saw the big 5 within two game drives and also got a great sighting of the very rare wild dog.

After the Timbavati we took a drive to the southern part of the Kruger. You can fly this route but I opted for the 3 hour drive to see some of the country. It was a very scenic journey passing some local villages, spectacular countryside and also because of the time of year we also saw the beautiful sight of Jacaranda Trees in bloom.

On arrival into the Sabi Sands you could really notice the difference in the vegetation from the dryer North. The landscape was a little more lush as they experience slightly more rain in the South.

Burma (Myanmar) on sale now...

Burma or to give its official name of Myanmar has been ostracised by the international community for over a decade until recently when the National League for Democracy said it now welcomed ‘responsible’ tourism. The people of Burma deserve our support as they have been left to deal with a harsh regime on their own and the money clients spend goes directly to them rather than into the coffers of the government.

So what should you expect? Asia as it used to be, warts and all! Amazing sights and delightful, gentle, friendly people anxious to welcome you to their beautiful country and roads in need of repair!

Start off in the colonial city of Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) with its wide roads, Victorian and Edwardian buildings and its most famous site The Shwedagon Pagoda. Head on to Pagan better known as the city with 4 million pagodas and then to Mandalay made famous by Rudyard Kipling.

Perhaps take a cruise on the Irrawaddy which for many people is one of the best ways of enjoying Myanmar and its many delights. Head to Maymyo a former British Hill Station and take a horse drawn cart to see grand colonial houses and its famous botanical gardens. No visit would be complete without a visit to Inle Lake with over one hundred monasteries, and a thousand pagodas along its shores and watch the fishermen with their unique way of rowing using their legs freeing their hands to fish.

Our Burma tours do not use any military owned facilities, hotels, airlines, railways or agencies. We use small owner managed hotels, car hire companies and private guides. Furthermore, we do not take our guests to the pagodas, temples or bridges constructed by the military regime. Having recently spent four nights on a flying visit to Mexico, I have returned home wanting more, more, more! What an amazing destination with so much to offer people of all ages and interests.

I, like most people, initially associated Mexico with being a party destination with huge high rise hotels and 24 hour lively bars and nightclubs. How wrong I was! Cancun still has that reputation, but moving away from there, the Riviera Maya where I stayed is a world away from the hussle and bussle of Cancun. It has some amazing properties, ranging from traditionally styled boutique hotels such as Esencia and Maroma, as well as larger properties catering for couples and families alike such as the Fairmont and the luxuriously modern Rosewood. These two hotels along with the beautiful oriental style Banyan Tree, form part of the Mayakoba complex which has a fantastic PGA Greg Norman designed golf course spanning the whole of the resort.

The beautiful jungle setting of the hotels I visited and stayed at, and their eco friendly approach to the area and environment really impressed me. Opening my shutters in the morning to a view of the jungle and mangroves, was as equally, if not more, stunning than a view of the beach. However, the beaches I saw were stunning, possibly the best I have ever seen.

Maroma Beach has been voted the best beach in the world so that gives you an idea of the standards – picture postcard perfect! If you like everything to be included for you whilst you are on holiday, Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita is a perfect home from home all inclusive hotel.With unlimited worldwide telephone calls and 24 hour in-room private dining included as well as a vast array of many more ‘endless privileges’, Zoetry really is the perfect place to escape from it all.

If you can tear yourself away from the hotels, the archaeological sites of Chitchen Itza and Tulum are an absolute must see. I found learning about Mayan civilisation and culture extremely interesting and was amazed at the intricacy of the ruins I saw. If you have children, they will absolutely love the various water parks and adventure parks available – big kids like myself loved them too!!

All in all, an amazing trip to a fantastic country with so much to see and do! I can’t wait to return! Japan: An official update...

As we approach our first ever Robert Broad 'Travel Lecture' on Thursday 13th October in Lichfield we take a look at tourism in Japan...

Japan has had a very tough 2011, but the sun is most definitely rising again. After the events of March 11th, the north eastern Tohoku region is gradually recovering whilst the rest of Japan looks forward to the positively pleasant autumn months almost six months on from the unusually dark days of spring 2011.

Contrary to sensationalised reports in the western media, Japan is very safe. The country is huge with the vast majority completely unaffected by the events earlier this year. The tsunami affected region and Fukushima power plant are in the far north east of Japan, many miles from the countries more classic destinations such as Tokyo (170 miles), Kyoto (495 miles), Miyajima Island (690 miles) and the tropical Okinawa Islands (1165 miles).

Tourists are cautiously trickling back to Japan and returning to the west full of praise, enthusiasm and amazing travelling tales from this truly unique country. Travellers talk of fantastic cultural experiences, a stunning country and super-friendly people literally going out of their way to welcome foreign visitors. Japan wants you to visit and there are more reasons to do it now rather than later.

As Japan gradually comes out of the hot summer months, it heads into the very pleasant temperatures of autumn with renewed optimism. Like the more famous cherry blossom, but perhaps more dramatically, the red and gold leaves colour the countryside across mountain sides and the temple gardens. The tradition of ‘Koyo’ (autumn leaf viewing) is at its height in October and November with temperatures still in the twenties Celsius.

Major festivals take place throughout Japan during the warm colours of autumn adding yet more reasons to visit. Kyoto’s Jidai Matsuri (22 October) is a celebration of Japan’s feudal history – see processions of performers dressed in samurai costume and people carrying small shrines (mikoshi) on their shoulders as they parade through the streets. Kyoto also witnesses the enchanting Gion Geisha dances from 1-10 November, each telling a story to the accompaniment of the shamisen (Japanese guitar). On 15 November, children across the country dress up in kimono to celebrate the Shichi-go-san festival marking the lucky ages of 3, 5 and 7 years old.

Autumn 2011 and beyond provide numerous reasons to enjoy a cultural adventure like no other (for all the right reasons) and as spring 2012 is already looking very popular, now is definitely the time to travel and experience Japan. There is only one Japan, it is safe and the Land of the Rising Sun is shining again.

Earlier this year our Director Nathan Collins travelled to Bali on his honeymoon. Here fellow Director Oliver Broad quizzes Nathan on the island and what it has to offer...

Why did you choose Bali for your honeymoon?
After looking at a range of countries it was apparent that summer is a difficult time to choose an exotic honeymoon destination. After scouring the globe I discovered Bali, an area we both hadn't been to and were intrigued to visit having a previous passion for the Far East.

What surprised you about the island?
The island does really have something special about it. The charm of the people, the luxury comfort of the hotels, plus the combination of this with traditional rustic charm.

How do you get there?
As it is a 15 hour flight I recommend combining it with an Asian city such as I did with Singapore. Singapore Airlines offer fantastic connections and excellent service. From London they use the new A380 on certain flights which was a great experience.

Who does Bali appeal to?
A wide variety of travellers from couples of all ages looking for history, quality service and very comfortable surrounds. Some of Asia’s best hotels are now in Bali and can easily be combined as part of a multi centre destination with chic inland areas such as the town of Ubud, one of filming locations for the film ‘Eat Pray Love’.

What else is there to do than the beach?
From picturesque cultural inland areas, temples, wildlife including an excellent elephant reserve and spa retreats there is much more to do than sit on the beach.

What about cuisine?
The food was some of the best I have ever had in Asia. The resort of Seminyak has some of the islands best restaurants and offers a wide of cuisine from Balinese, Asian to seafood and international food, all tastes are catered for.

How do you get around the island?
We found the best way and the most economical was hiring a driver for the day. This was great value for money and comfortable and would show us around the island pointing out highlights along the way.

How did this compare to other holidays?
It really was the trip of a lifetime, just as I imagined. The choice of accommodation was fantastic for us, it gave us a great combination of city and relaxation. Having our own private pool villa in Bali was a real added luxury and comes very highly recommended for anyone looking for privacy and seclusion.

What is Make Holidays Greener Week?
Make Holidays Greener Week is a consumer campaign that has been launched by the Travel Foundation. The campaign aims to engage consumers with the idea of ‘greener’ holidays, which help to protect the environment and benefit local people in tourism destinations.

The campaign’s main focus is to challenge consumers to do three simple things when they next go on holiday that will help benefit local people and protect the environment in their holiday destinations.

What are greener holidays?
Greener holidays simply means holidays that benefit people and help protect the environment in destinations.
The great part is that everyone can make holidays greener by doing simple things, no matter what type of holiday they are going on... and, more often than not, holidaymakers will also find they have a more enriched, unique and memorable holiday experience as a result.

Robert Broad Travel helps holidaymakers go greener this summer...

Robert Broad Travel of Boley Park, Lichfield is promoting Green Issues as part of a national Make Holidays Greener campaign from the Travel Foundation, which aims to raise consumer understanding of what sustainable travel is all about.

Make Holidays Greener week, which is in its second year, runs from 2 to 9 July 2011 and will encourage holidaymakers to do just three things on their summer break to make a difference to the place they are visiting and the people living there.

The awareness week takes place just before schools break up and many families head off on their summer break, so that holidaymakers can take simple action whilst they are away.

Director Oliver Broad, said: “On a recent trip to the Galapagos Islands I was educated on how important local projects are to protect the islands and the wildlife. Many of the species are indigenous to the islands and without careful protection we would lose them. This week we are providing our clients with information about her tourism impacts destinations all over the world and we want to use the campaign to highlight the positive work being done by the travel industry – and show that by working hand-in-hand with holidaymakers we can help to protect destinations for future generations of travellers to enjoy.”

Make Holidays Greener is geared towards raising mainstream consumer understanding of
sustainable travel and how everyone can play their part in caring for destinations we love to visit on holiday.

Examples of how we can all make holidays greener include buying local crafts to support livelihoods in the area, turning off air conditioning and lights when they’re not needed to reduce energy-use, and recycling any packaging before going on holiday, helping to protect the environment in destinations.

Oliver added: “You only have to switch on the television or radio to hear how we can all make small lifestyle changes at home that together can make a huge difference to the environment - and that message is just as relevant to our holidays. If every holiday-maker did just three simple things it would create a huge impact, helping local people in holiday destinations and protecting the places we all love to visit.”

Kerala Calling...Dave visits India again!...

Day 1: The heat, the noise the sheer volume of people and traffic, yes it was all too much to bear – so I left the M25! Thanks to those nice people at Purple Parking my car was soon parked and I was making my way to Terminal 4 at Heathrow. I checked in with Jet Airways and met up with the rest of the group. I quickly realised that I was the oldest person in the group of 8 but didn’t think anyone else had picked up on this until one of them asked if I would like to sit down!

Jet Airways check in was excellent but the bad news was we were upgraded to business class – what a disappointment but it’s something we just have to put up with! A visit to the executive lounge was also arranged as was pre-boarding so that we could have a tour of the aircraft and also see the small sleeping area with 6 bunks for some of the crew to sleep (hopefully not the pilot).

Jet Airways business class lived up to my expectations and also my memories as I have travelled with them before. The crew were excellent, food superb and the 30 seats that converted into flat beds were extremely comfortable. Departure was on time at 2125hrs and soon everyone was settling down with the complimentary pyjamas for the 9 hour flight to Mumbai. I personally would have preferred a nightie but hey ho that’s another story..

Day 2: We arrived into Mumbai at 1100hrs local time and immediately realised how much better the airport was since my first visit many years ago; very modern, comfortable and air-conditioned . We transferred by coach to the domestic terminal which took us past the shanty towns which back up right to the airport fence and we also witnessed evidence of major redevelopment work taking place at the airport.

Our flight departed at 1340hrs and landed at 1525hrs in Cochin and was operated by Jet Airways shuttle, a basic no frills flight but comfortable although extremely busy. It is amazing as to how big air travel is in India with huge numbers flying daily to every point in India and also of course around the world. One of the group mentioned that on a Sunday there were 10 flights to the UK from Mumbai – amazing. On arrival we were transferred to the Vivanta by Taj Hotel for a 2 night stay.

My first impressions of Cochin and Kerala were that is very different to Delhi and the North – it appeared far more affluent, extremely green and a lot quieter with very little bibbing of horns and no animals wandering the streets! It was also very warm with temperatures in the 30’s and humidity of 90%. The Vivanta by Taj is situated on Willingdon Island with magnificent views of Cochin Harbour (including the cranes). The hotel is fairly modern and has 96 rooms, an infinity pool, spa and gym. I really liked this hotel and the breakfasts were excellent.

A lot of the food in Kerala is of course fish and that evening we were treated to a cookery demonstration and tour of The Casino Hotel followed by a delicious meal of lobster, prawns, squid and local fish -absolutely delicious . The food in Kerala is amazing and contrary to what is generally believed it is not hot but cooked in the delicious spices that are grown locally which bring out all the flavours. Curries in this country do not compare and on no occasion did we have to ask our hosts to ‘tone’them down.

Day 3: Probably the best way of seeing Cochin is from the water and thanks to the kindness of the Brunton Boatyard Hotel who lent us their boat we were able to do this and spent the morning looking from the water at the amazing Chinese fishing nets, bazaars, old storage warehouses and traditional mansions. Following this we visited Jewtown with its spice markets, antique shops and Mattancherry Palace (now a museum complete with some amazing murals). We also managed to see the Chinese fishing nets from the land and visited the local fish market to see some of the unbelievable variety of fish on sale.

Further hotel visits, more food and an evening visit to the lovely Brunton Boatyard Hotel for dinner completed our day. Here I made a note to look into the history of the Brunton Boatyard on my return to the UK as the hotel is named after the boatyard and in St Francis Church in Cochin there is a plaque to George Brunton the founder of the boatyard who was a Brummie like me! Also in the church was the resting place for the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama before his remains were dug up and moved back to Portugal.

Oh dear – late night, feeling delicate and a 7 hour road journey to Thekkady (212 km) to contemplate ...

Day 4: The journey did go quickly though with stops to see a couple farming rubber trees and watching while they extract the sap, stops for coffee breaks (Nescafe was around 12p a cup – I’ll get these you get the beers later was the phrase used!) and just so much to see as you travel through the green slopes of the Cardamom Hills, viewing the vast plantations of teak, cardamom, tea, rubber and coffee. Here we stayed at the Spice Village Hotel – a delightful hotel with bungalow style accommodation and very much built in a ‘back to nature’ style (no television in the room so no Emmerdale!!)

Day 5: This is the spice growing region of the Western Ghats and no visit would be complete without seeing the delightful spice gardens and also of course the obligatory elephant ride before continuing our journey to Kumarakom which was about 4 hours We stopped at a local ‘service’ station for food and a break with sandwiches at around £1 and a wonderful biryani at £1.25; we feasted like kings yet paid like paupers! We arrived late afternoon at my favourite hotel the Kumarakom Lake Resort which has stunning views of Vembanad Lake . Included for all guests is a one hour sunset cruise which is a delightful way to watch the sun go down. The accommodation is built around a winding swimming area so when you open the door of your cottage style room there is the pool right in front of you - absolutely delightful. One strange thing with the bathrooms, not just here but at several of the hotels is that they are open to the sky which is rather strange. I think I managed to scare most of the wildlife away and indeed even the mosquitoes were very wary! Afternoon tea and snacks are also served here every afternoon at 4.00pm...all very civilized.

Day 6: The highlight of the visit; a backwater cruise on a traditional houseboat complete with our own chef. What a delightful way to spend a day. The backwaters are made up of 5 large lakes linked by canals and fed by 38 rivers which cover half of the state of Kerala and an area of 900km of waterways . The kettuvallum which is a traditional houseboat is used to travel these beautiful waterways – quite large ours had two air conditioned bedrooms although they do come in different sizes. Many people choose to stay overnight but I would recommend the day cruise as all boats have to be moored by 5.00pm and are not allowed to move until next morning.

There is of course nowhere to walk so if overnighting would be quite restrictive. Many of the canals are too small for the kettuvallum so a smaller canoe is used for one/two hour trips allowing you to see so much more (no longer seats are very hard!). This is a fantastic experience and gives you the chance to see rural life as it really is and which has not really changed over the years. Everybody waves and it really is a magical experience.

On our return to Kurakom we stopped for dinner at the Coconut Lagoon another very pleasant hotel and its unusual feature is that it can only be reached by boat . Our boat was followed by fruit bats all the way and was a fantastic way of arriving at a hotel.

Day 7: One of the fastest growing areas in tourism in India is the development of home stays. The concept allows you to experience a stay in a more traditional small property usually maximum 6 rooms although the ones we visited had only 4 rooms. During your stay you mix with the local people, explore the local villages and markets – even help prepare the meals.

They really do allow you to see how life really is in these backwaters. Accommodation is of a high standard and if you are looking for a more authentic experience away from the normal type of hotel in small quiet surroundings then these are definitely worth considering.
We managed to take in 3 of these properties; 2 overlooking Vembanad Lake and one on the beach in Marari. I loved them all but possibly my favourite was Symphony on The Beach (this one also had a swimming pool) with four fantastic cottages with outside seating areas where meals are served for you.

Onwards to our final hotel for the last 2 nights, The Marari Beach Hotel. It felt slightly run down when we arrived but accommodation was good in individual cottages again with open roof bathrooms (I think some of the mosquitoes remembered me!). The hotel is right on the beach and we all grew to like this property . Meals were buffet style with a wide choice and a lovely outside bar although this does close at 10pm. Quite a shock to the system! A stroll through the gardens took us to the beautiful beach which runs for about 20 miles. It really is a beautiful spot but remember beaches in India are not private and there are no facilities there either. The Arabian sea was very rough and definitely not for swimming.

Day 8: Our last full day – the week seems to have flown by and we spend the time with one more house visit to which most of the group cycled to. It’s a great area to explore by bike, nice and flat and you can just tootle along at your own pace with plenty of stops for refreshments. Last minute panic for presents to take home at the hotel shop and a trip by Tuk-Tuk followed by dinner in the hotel completes our final day.

Day 9: It’s a good job the bar does close at 10pm as we have a wake up call at 0330hrs to begin our departure for Cochin by road and the journey home to the UK where we finally land at about 6.00pm UK time.

Summary
An excellent trip to an area of India which is completely different to the hectic North. Very laid back, peaceful with delightful welcoming people and excellent food. If you are a first time visitor then I would still recommend visiting The Taj Mahal and Rajasthan first but there is nothing to stop you combining both areas for a complete contrast.

What the trip did bring home to me is what a vast country India is and how the different states vary so much - Incredible India – the tourist board call it and Kerala is called Gods Own Country - they are not far wrong! Why not experience it for yourselves?

India plans for it's first Formula 1 Grand Prix !

New Delhi is preparing to host its first Formula One race, the 2011 Indian F1 Grand Prix, an exciting prospect for all British Formula 1 fans. Delhi is the perfect opportunity to enjoy Formula One motor racing in a great, brand new venue and to spend a few days delving into the culture of India's capital city, which has so many historic links to Britain.

Day 2 on the Galapagos Islands brought more Sea Lions, Marine Iguanas, more Blue Footed Boobies, Frigate Birds and the wonderful Albatross, who were nesting their eggs.

This along with the dramatic landscape of Espanol Including an amazing 'blow hole' which had it's water blown over the island like a morning dewy mist made for an absolutely amazing day.

And to finish it all off, a phenomenal sunset!

Today we have arrived at the island of Floreana in search of Flamingo's ad Turtles.

An absolutely amazing trip so far, this really is one of the most unique placed I have ever been to.

Live from the Galapagos Islands...

It is difficult to find the most appropriate words to describe the Galapagos islands. The scenery and wildlife are breathtaking. Yesterday I boarded Isabela 2, a 40 cabin luxury cruise ship that is taking me on a quick 3 night trip around the islands.

Our first afternoon included sightings of Blue Footed Boobies, Frigate birds and a number of Iguanas.

Today we ventured to the island of Espanola where we enjoyed a morning with the Sea Lions. It really does feel like the wildlife are 'allowing' you to visit them as they go about their daily business in their natural environment. Never before have I been so close to animals like this with absolutely no artificial facilities, just their natural and unique surroundings.

This afternoon we are off to find the Albatross on the other side of the island.

So far, an absolutely 'once-in-a-lIfetime' experience and we still have 2 more days here!

Q) is there anywhere in Europe away from the crowds that offers a truly unspoilt experience, with good weather and easy flight access that won't break the bank?

A) Absolutely, and it's called the Alentejo region...

Our Director Oliver Broad visited Portugal on Sunday for lunch, celebrating the first ever flight from London Heathrow to Beja, in the heart of the Alentejo region, Portugal...

As the sun rises over Heathrow and the first distant lights on overnight arrival aircraft appear in the distance, we set foot on our EMB 135 to Beja, Portugal. "Where" I hear you ask?...exactly! Lying 177 south east of Lisbon, Beja is an ex military base that has been developed into a passenger terminal, currently only serves London Heathrow.

But why Beja and why now? Standing at the heart of the Alentejo region, an area of Portugal covering nearly one third of the country and well known amongst those 'in the know' for being one of the best kept secrets. Some Brits who love the area so much have uprooted their families and emigrated there (including one of our clients) !

Don't expect a Starbucks, don't even expect the Coca Cola signs that we have become so accustomed to on our travels around Europe. This is how holidays should be. Total escapism.

Each would appeal to different tastes but the latter should certainly be experienced to allow for an authentic stay.Truly an unspoilt destination with uninhabited picturesque coves, historic towns, wineries and the largest man made reservoir in Europe. The latter itself can accommodate you for at least a week as you move around the shoreline from pier to pier exploring off the beaten coves, villages and wildlife.

My trip alas would only allow me a taster of a day to whet my appetite and invite me, like a select few before me, to fall in love with the region.

Keen to attract visitors with it's ailing economy, Portugal have invested heavily in the airport infrastructure at Beja. On arrival choose to explore with a self drive option (there is very little traffic at 0900 on a Sunday, your arrival time, great to help you get used to driving on the right!). Alternatively transfers can be arranged wherever you choose to stay, and this should not just be for a week in one place. At the very least, split your week in two, coast plus inland would be the obvious choice, or maybe end in Lisbon if you are short on time and cant afford to be away for the full week.

Wine tasting, relaxing with the locals, cycling, walking, sun bathing, shopping, tasting local delicacies, there is something for anyone looking for a part of Europe that is still barely discovered.

And so if you want to experience it before the crowds descend, consider the Alentejo region ASAP...

Lisa in our office visited the Seychelles earlier this year and offers her opinion on the destination below...

Who does the Seychelles appeal to? Honeymooners looking for a romantic, paradise setting or those who are looking for a prefect beach destination in a completely non 'built up' environment. It would also make a fantastic wedding destination at surprisingly good value for money.

What surprised you the most? How easy it was to get around the islands either by a small aircraft or short boat ride, meaning it is ideal for island hopping. Plus everybody on the Islands were incredibly friendly.

Which was your favorite hotel and why? My favorite hotel was the Domaine de L'Orange. I loved the lush tropical gardens it was set in and the style of accommodation, a excellent boutique hotel and the views from the from the Villa presidentielle were amazing. I also loved the island of La Digue, as it is very relaxing and amazing beaches.

What kind of budget does it appeal to? Prices for some of the hotels may seem very high. However it is very exclusive and this quality of the islands should be taken into account as there really is nowhere like it to compare. However there are affordable options suiting lower budgets such as guest houses which are beautiful and a great way to allow you to visit the islands if your budget doesn't allow more luxurious hotels.

What is the flying time? Between 10-11 hours with Air Seychelles.

Where can you fly from? Air Seychelles fly from Heathrow with touch downs in Italy or France. Emirates also offer flights from regional airports with good connections from in Dubai meaning you do not have to travel just from London Heathrow.

Would you combine it with anyway and if so where? With the Emirates flights been so convenient you could spend a few nights in Dubai. You can also combine Mauritius and the Seychelles together.

What else is there to apart from the beach? There is the Valle De Mai which is a Nature Reserve and World Heritage site. There is also the option to island hop which I would definitely recommend!

What kind of food is served? The majority of the food served is fish as it is readily available and is delicious. It is highly inspired by French, Indian and African cuisine and there are lots of fish curries. Is very rich and is exotically prepared.

What a fantastic ship! We were there for the historic launch of l'Astral, sister ship to l'Boreal from Compagnie du Ponant.

It was great to see these two super yachts depart side by side from Marseilles port with the fanfare of fireworks, delicious food and champagne like only the French know how.

Both ships offer a contemporary, intimate luxury cruise experience and a wonderful French flair. Itineraries range from scenic sailings around the Mediterranean to expedition cruises to Antarctica.

Some of the cabins have wonderful spaces, including a corner bath and shower...they really do not seem like cruise ship cabins at all.

There are the usual facilities on both l'Boreal and l'Astral including a pool and sundeck, theatre, bar, restaurants and spa. However as these are not super liners they are on a small scale offering a much more intimate and personal experience.

Arrived in Marseilles...

Seamless experience at Gatwick using mobile check in...a must from now on!! I am aiming to make this whole trip paperless! This is going ok so far: Sofitel Gatwick: check, Mobile BA check in: check, Sofitel Marseilles: check...maybe I should print the invites for l'Astral tomorrow night...that might be a problem...travel all this way to witness the launch of one of the worlds most luxurious yachts and get turned away for being too green and not printing a ticket. Best not take any chances!!

We had a great start to our visit to Marseilles with the Sofitel allowing us to check in to the room first thing...at 1030am, now that's service.

This hotel is in a great spot, more well known for being slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre (still only a 10/15 min walk) and offering stunning views of the harbour...

Marseilles is easily explored on foot. With a number of cultural sights mixed with a real mix of shopping and tacky tourist offerings you could easily fill a couple of days. The old town is great, easy to walk around and interesting to learn about the history of the city. The old town also offers stunning views...

This part of the city is preparing for the opening of a new Intercontinental Hotel housed in one of the cities great historic landmark buildings looking down onto the harbour.

For those who have got used to seeing European cities by bicycle, there are Marseilles's own version of London's 'Barclays' bikes available to hire, however the cities main attractions are easily explored on foot.

For those looking for somewhere a little different to shop till you drop, Marseilles won't disappoint. However we need to make a trip back tomorrow as most of the city was shut down for the Bank Holiday. From new high street brands such as 'Cos' (much more selection than in their London branches), to old names such as C&A, to an eclectic mix of local traders and market stalls, you will need a good rest at the end of the day!

So far, so good in Marseilles. More exploring to do tonight and tomorrow morning before we head to the port for our exploration of l'Astral, Compagnie du Ponant's new luxury yacht.

Last night the great and the good of the travel industry gathered at the Lancaster Hotel in London for the 15th Agent Achievement Awards. This national awards ceremony recognises excellence in travel distribution.

For a number of years we have been nominated and then become finalists in the awards. Last year for the first time we won Top Central England Agent as well as Top Luxury Agent in the UK.

Managing Director Alan Broad, Directors; Nathan Collins and Oliver Broad as well as Dave Archer, Specialist Sales & Business Development attended the awards last night along with a number of other AITO Specialist Travel Agents and larger travel companies in the UK.

We were nominated for 3 awards:
- Top Central England Agent
- Top Luxury Agent in the UK
- Top High Street Agent

And we did it ! We swooped all 3 !!!

Katherine visits America's Wild West...

After months of excitement, the day I had been waiting for was finally here – my trip to America – a place I had never visited before!

After a pleasant flight with British Airways I arrived into Denver and was transferred to the Grand Hyatt for my first nights stay. After a good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed, I met up with the rest of the group along with our Tour Manager Evan and our coach driver Tim. As this was my first time travelling as part of a group I didn’t really know what to expect but Evan and Tim were fantastic and introduced everyone in the group.

After our luggage was transferred from our rooms to the coach the journey began! I was very surprised at how spacious our coach was with lots of legroom.

The first stop of today was at the resort of Vail – a very quaint picturesque alpine village. We were lucky as it was the local market day and Evan insisted on everyone trying the famous ‘Palisade Peaches’ that Colorado had to offer!

Next we carried on our journey and entered the state of Utah travelling through the Rocky Mountains before arriving in Moab for our 2 night stay at Red Cliffs Lodge. As we arrived I was blown away by the spectacular scenery of the red rocks surrounding the lodge on the banks of the Colorado River – it was beautiful. Our lodge was superb and had a very homely feel to it.

After our nights stay at Red Cliffs Lodge – today we visited Canyonlands National Park where we saw wonderful views from the Island in the Sky. After an afternoon at leisure, tonight we decided to take part in the optional excursion – ‘a jet boat ride along the Colorado River’ which is an absolute must! As we travelled down the river we saw some beautiful Blue Herrings on the banks of the river. The guide was brilliant and was very knowledgeable about the surrounding area.

After a wonderful night last night, this morning we left Red Cliffs Lodge and began our journey with a visit to Arches National Park, followed by a visit to the Anasazi Heritage Centre before ending the day in Mesa Verde National Park where we stayed overnight at Far View Lodge – where I had an amazing close up view of a deer right in front of our lodge!

This morning after exploring Mesa Verde and visiting Spruce Tree House – an amazing dwelling built into rock, we began our journey to Monument Valley – which I was particularly excited to visit as it is a very famous backdrop for many western films! As soon as we arrived at Far View Lodge and went out onto our balcony I was astonished by the view of the valley right on my doorstep! This evening we had a guided tour of the valley floor by an all-terrain vehicle which although being very bumpy was fascinating! The guided tour was then followed by a Navajo cookout with storytelling and music which was fantastic!

After waking up to the stunning view of the valley, we started our journey to Lake Powell which proved to be a dramatic change in scenery! We boarded a ferry from Hall’s Crossing to Bullfrog Marina and transferred to Defiance House Lodge for our overnight stay. On arrival at the lodge we were very lucky to watch a big lightning storm across the lake which was spectacular!

This morning we left Lake Powell as we began our journey to Bryce Canyon. En-route we had a short stop at Capitol Reef National Park. On arrival into Bryce Canyon I was truly blown away by the dramatic scenery – I have never experienced such a unique place and it really did have the wow factor for me! Bryce Canyon was a place that I didn’t know an awful lot about, but now I would recommend it as a must see!

After a good nights sleep at Bryce Canyon National Park Lodge, we left for Zion National Park. On arrival into the park we had a guided tour by private shuttle, the guide was very informative and taking the shuttle was a good way of seeing the park as it is quite spread out. I enjoyed Zion National Park as we visited from ground level whereas all of the other parks were visited from a high level – so it allowed us different views. Later this afternoon we left Zion National Park and headed for Grand Canyon National Park – North rim. As we drove into the park I was amazed by the surrounding greenery – a lasting memory was seeing the many Bison grazing along the roadside!

Our log cabin at the North Rim was very cosy and was only a short walk to the edge of the rim. One unique view over the canyon was from the dining room – the huge glass windows allowed the most spectacular view!

After a good night’s sleep in our lodge, we awoke the following morning to watch the fantastic sunrise over the canyon which was beautiful. Today we drove along the Cape Royal Scenic Drive to Point Imperial and Cape Royal for some of the best views over the Grand Canyon – we also watched a lightning storm over the canyon which was pretty amazing!

This evening we had a farewell dinner at Grand Canyon Lodge.

This morning we left Grand Canyon Lodge and started our journey to Las Vegas – at this point I was very excited as Vegas is a place I have always dreamt of visiting!

This afternoon on arrival into Las Vegas we were transferred to Planet Hollywood where we would stay for the next 3 nights. Las Vegas was added onto my trip as an extension and I felt that it was a nice way of finishing the tour as it was 3 days of my own arrangements.

Las Vegas certainly lived up to my expectations and I would definitely go back. A must do is the Stratosphere Top of the World Restaurant – located on the 109^th floor it has the most spectacular views over Vegas which is certainly impressive as night falls and the lights come alive!

After 3 nights in Las Vegas it was time to return home and back to reality but I have the best memories and photographs of the trip of a lifetime!

India - the second love of my life...

Our resident India tours & holiday expert Dave tells us why he loves the country so much.

What is it that attracts me so much to India? – after all there’s the heat, the noise and the smells to contend with let alone the chaos that greets you after an 8 and a half hour flight from Heathrow as you emerge into the sunshine at Delhi Airport. The sheer amount of people, the noise from hundreds of car horns and the shock of seeing live animals in the street are enough to send most people into a state of shock and a wish to return home as quickly as possible.

How quickly however those first feelings evaporate and by the end of your stay you are already planning your return.

Most people visiting India for the first time, travel to Northern India and in particular Rajasthan home of course to the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra (remember it is closed on a Friday!) The Taj is everything you would expect it to be and my advice would be to try and visit twice, once at sunset and again at sunrise. Best time to visit Rajasthan is November to April although early part of January can be misty and sometimes a little cold.

Apart from Delhi and Agra, Rajasthan is home to Jaipur , Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Udaipur. You should also look at including if you have the time a visit to Ranthambore to try and spot a tiger in the wild – an experience which will live with me forever. In Delhi don’t forget to visit Humayun’s Tomb built in the 16th century by the second Mughal Emperor. In Agra also take the time to visit Baby Taj as it is known which is a smaller mausoleum on which the more famous Taj Mahal is based. The journey there across a bridge crammed full of people, cars rickshaws and monkeys is worth doing for this alone.

India is a fantastic country packed full of surprises wherever you go. The currency is the rupee, time difference is + 5.5hrs. My advice is to travel with an open mind - be prepared to see some amazing sights and as the advertising says just enjoy ‘Incredible India’ !

"I do" - it must be fit for a royal...

Lewa Downs in Kenya; a Paradise of Royal proportions

Lying just to the north of Africa’s second highest mountain, Mt Kenya, lies Lewa Downs, a paradise of Royal proportions.

Lewa started out as a settler farm in 1924 when the ancestors of the Craig family sought a new life in the colonial outpost of Kenya. In those days it must have been a pretty tough area to farm, and one can imagine the constant battle to keep the livestock safe against marauding lions and stealthy leopards. On the plus side, the altitude would have certainly helped against those pesky tropical diseases, and the beauty of the rolling hills set against the majestic mountain must have gladdened the heart daily.

Today, the Lewa Conservancy covers some 62,000 acres of which 14,000 is national forest and the rest privately owned land. Theis extremely diverse withgrassland interspersed with acacia forests, riverine woodland,gorges and ravines, montane forest and the Lewa swampland.

The history of the conservancy startsthe height of the rhino and elephant poaching days of the mid-1980's when Anna Mertz asked the Craig family to set asideareause as a rhino sanctuary. After a few years, the family decided to proportion more of the land to wildlife and slowly the emphasis changed to what Lewa is today - one of Kenya’s finest wildlife destinations.

To support the conservancy, the original Craig family homestead evolved into the small 18 bed personalised lodge, Lewa Wilderness, offering a high standard of comfort and personal service.

It is still run by Will and Emma Craig. A second tented lodge catering just 28 guests, Lewa Safari Camp, was developed to host tourists in the area near the rhino sanctuary. Between them, the lodges offer a range of game-viewing activities including both day and night game drives by open four-wheel drive vehicles, walks, horse and camel riding, and multi-day walking trails using lightweight mobile camps. And for the more romantic, take to the air ‘Out of Africa’ style in Will Craig’s personal bi-plane.

Today, Lewa is home to some 34 black and 33 white rhino. In addition, it's also home to around 25% of the world population of the rare Grevy's zebra whilst other animals to be seen include,giraffe, all the major predators and a host of antelope species including the swamp-dwelling adapted sitatunga. The birdlife is superb with over 440 species recorded - from the ridges, it is possible to photograph vultures and eagleswithin a few feet. There is also a prehistoric site where Acheulian hand axes can be found scattered on the groundAlthough most of the conservancy is set aside for wildlife,horticulture, stud cattle, andfarming practisesare still carried out. Furniture making (from local acacia woods) and rug weaving businesses create further employment for the local people. If you are interested, a visit to see the working side of the ranch and conservancy can be arranged. There is also Conservation Centre which is worthwhile visiting.

No surprise then that it was whilst staying at Lewa that Prince William popped the question - a paradise fit for a king.
